NYCBL BASEBALL: Power goes out with grace note
Staff Report
Niagara Gazette
The Niagara Power made sure their final bus ride of the summer would be a happy one.
Taking a big lead in the early innings Thursday, the Power won their New York Collegiate Baseball League season finale 9-2, going out on a grace after a grueling 14-game losing streak down the stretch.
“These guys showed a lot of character and a lot of fortitude,” said a proud Cal Kern, the club’s general manager.
“They really played well from start to finish. They were chirping and everything. They fought hard. They didn’t give up. And I’m really pleased.
Niagara scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second, and four in the third. They had chances to score more, leaving 17 runners on base in the game. They tallied 13 hits.
Travis Latz led the offense with four RBIs. He hit a home run and a double and scored three runs.
Brian Goodwin also hit a home run and a double. Jake Gill had two hits, scoring both times. Alejandro Crisostomo and Eric Birch each had two hits. Stephen Cammuso knocked in a run.
Matt Schimpf went six solid innings to earn the win on the mound, and Shelby Robertson pitched the final three.
Afterward, Crisostomo presented Kern with the game ball.
Thursday’s game was a makeup from earlier in the season, and would not have been played if Geneva wasn’t still battling for the final playoff spot in the NYCBL West division.
Niagara finishes up at 11-29, in last place in the NYCBL West for the third straight summer.
